10 Expensive Football Transfers That Now Look Like Steals
Football transfers have been crazy in recent months. Neymar, Dembele and Mbappe (loan deal) have all joined new clubs in transfers worth over $100 million. In recent years, clubs have spent lots of money on players but some of the past big transfers are now looking like steals after the latest moves by PSG and Barcelona. Here are some of the huge transfers that are now looking like a steal.
Kevin De Bruyne
In 2015, Kevin De Bruyne joined Manchester City for a reported fee of $89 million. The Belgium midfielder has shown why the club paid that money for him. He has had an impressive start to the season, scoring in the most recent Champions League game and scoring the winner against Chelsea today in the Premier League.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo set transfer records when he joined Real Madrid for a fee of about 90 million euros. The deal, which happened eight years ago, was a lot of money for just one player at the time but the move has paid off for Real Madrid. The Spanish Club has won three Champions League in the last four years and they will be looking to win it for the third straight time this season.
Sergio Aguero
Sergio Aguero joined Manchester City a few years after the club began rebuilding and spending big money in stars. The Argentinian striker joined the English club from Atletico Madrid for a fee of about 40 million euros. The transfer has been a huge success for City, with Aguero now just one goal away from equaling the all-time goal scorer at Manchester City.
Paulo Dybala
In 2015, Juventus signed Paulo Dybala for a 35 million euro fee. Two years later, the Argentinian striker is on the radar of many teams, including Barcelona and Real Madrid. Earlier this year, Palermo’s President Maurizio Zamparini said the striker is worth 150 million euros. In 2012, Palermo signed Dybala for a fee of 12 million euros. In just two years, Dybala has reached the Champions League final and earned a starting spot in Argentina’s national team.
Antoine Griezmann
In 2014, Atletico Madrid made one of its best signings in recent years by agreeing to a 30 million euro fee for Antoine Griezmann. The winger quickly impressed and the club has had lots of success, reaching two Champions League finals. In 2016, Griezmann won the Golden Boot at the UEFA EURO 2016 with six goals. Bleacher Report said just a few days ago that Manchester United was still interested in signing the French star. The English club was interested in signing Griezmann in the summer but a deal was not completed. A potential deal could be for around 100 million euros, according to Bleacher Report.
Marco Reus
In 2012, Borussia Dortmund signed Marco Reus in what has been one of the best transfers for the club in recent years. The German midfielder has had a number of injuries throughout his career but when he is healthy, he is one of the best in the sport. The combination of Reus and Aubameyang have made Dortmund a strong competitor in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Aubameyang’s professional career has landed him in many teams. The star striker is one of the fastest players in the world and began his career with Milan, who loaned him to four clubs in France before he made his move to Dortmund. In 2013, he joined Borussia Dortmund and has been one of the highest scorers for the German club since. In 135 appearances, he has 93 goals. In recent years, rumors have surfaced about record transfer deals for Aubameyang but he remains at Dortmund, who currently lead the Bundesliga.
Eden Hazard
Eden Hazard is one of the best midfielders in the sport and has already helped Chelsea win two league titles in recent years. The Belgium midfielder joined the English club from Lille for a fee of around 40 million euros. Just a few hours ago, several sports news sites reported that Chelsea will make Eden Hazard the highest paid player in the Premier League.
Arjen Robben
In August 2009, Robben joined Bayern Munich in a transfer worth around 25 million euros. That amount was a lot in the sport eight years ago but things have changed. The transfer of Robben to the German club was a success and he recently celebrated his eight years at the club. In his time there, he has reached two Champions League finals and won numerous Bundesliga titles.
Philippe Coutinho
Philippe Coutinho is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League but Liverpool didn’t have to set transfer records to sign him back in 2013. The transfer for the Brazilian star was a little over 11 million euros. Coutinho has flourished at Anfield and is an important part of the team’s attacking.
