British Nigerian Duo Samo Ones X Thnkn Aloud Sample Legendary Kwam 1 For New Single ‘Show Colour Re’
Introducing British Nigerian rap and afrobeats duo SAMO ONES x THNKN ALOUD with their brand new single titled ‘SHOW COLOUR RE’, which samples the classic cut ‘Show Color’ by legendary Nigerian fuji musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) from his seminal 1995 album Consolidation and is the lead single from the up-and-coming London-based duo’s forthcoming debut mixtape titled Juice & Jokes, which is scheduled for release this summer. Describing themselves as music fans first before artists, Samo Ones x Thnkn Aloud come highly recommended if you like the sounds of J-Hus, Kojo Funds, Wizkid or Burna Boy.
Produced by Ransom Beatz, who has previously worked with Dizzee Rascal, Runtown and Yung Filly among others, ‘Show Colour Re’ is an infectious genre-bending track from start to finish, which sees Samo Ones x Thnkn Aloud fusing their rap and afrobeats sounds together to glorious effects, as the duo deliver the witty lyrics, smooth vocals and catchy chorus and melodies that they are fast-becoming revered for. Thematically, the track encourages women to be themselves in spite of a world that can be so quick to judge.
For the accompanying music video for ‘Show Colour Re’, Samo Ones x Thnkn Aloud have linked up with Mediaworx director Eric Myers (Young Ma, Kojo Funds, Mr Eazi) to deliver a bright and colourful visual spectacle to tie in with the theme of the record, as Thnkn Aloud explains, “in the song, we use ‘colour’ as a metaphor for beauty and the video is about appreciating our beautiful black women, so we wanted colour to be the portrayed throughout, with the shots of us and the ladies working perfectly with the captivating colour palettes and backdrops”.
Speaking about their inspiration for the record, Samo Ones x Thnkn Aloud say, “the song represents showing your true colours and it is also a celebration of black women. We’re all very aware of society’s judgemental views of women, but the track pushes against that and wants to encourage women to be free to be themselves. That’s why the video opens with a black woman on a pedestal – ‘Show Colour Re’ is all about lifting up our black women in a world that wants to bring them down”.
