CAF Launches African Football Legends Match To Be Held Every Year

For a few years now, we have witnessed some games involving African football legends. While some were organized for charity, others were done for fun. Now, we can be sure these retired players will appear in their kits every year, thanks to CAF’s annual legends match.

The initiative was launched in Dakar on Sunday as a buildup to the 2018 CAF Awards, which holds on Tuesday. Similarly, subsequent legends games will coincide with the CAF Awards and will be held in the host country of the awards ceremony.

According to CAF Deputy General Secretary, Anthony Baffoe, the game doesn’t just give CAF the opportunity to celebrate the legends, it’s also a means to get former players involved in improving football in Africa.

The first edition will feature All Africa Stars, which boasts legends like Nwankwo Kanu, George Weah and Samuel Eto’o. They’ll be playing against the Senegal 2002 Team, which reached the quarter-final of the World Cup in South Korea/Japan with legends like Aliou Cissé, El Hadji Diouf and Joseph Koto.
