This year, HBO opened the Television Critics Association (TCA) tour, where American journalists cover the schedules of networks and platforms in the US. Expectations of Casey Bloys, Head of Programming and spokesperson for HBO, couldn’t have been higher, and he didn’t disappoint.

Between announcements of the return of True Detective, the new SF series by J.J. Abrams and the adaptation of Watchmen by Damon Lindelof, series lovers were holding their breath. Finally, Casey Bloys gave them what they were all waiting for: the release date for the final season of Game of Thrones.

Season 8 of the show will be broadcast during the first half of 2019, which we understand to mean sometime between January 1st and June 30th. HBO could close the loop by scheduling the season premiere for April, when the first pilot was broadcast in 2011. Casey Bloys remained vague on the subject, promising simply a “rather great” final season.

He also confirmed that filming of the prequel written by screenwriter Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) will begin in early 2019, contrary to reports from the Belfast Telegraph. The team behind the spin-off is still in the process of hiring a director and cast.
