Idris Elba To Play The ‘Hunchback Of Notre Dame’ In Netflix’s Upcoming Remake

Idris Elba is about to trade-in his murder detective get-up on Luther to star in the “currently untitled” remake of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix.

According to sources, the British actor, musician and DJ will direct and produce the film described as a “modern retelling” of the 19th-century gothic romance novel.

Published in 1831, the story follows Quasimodo, a hunchback who falls wholeheartedly in love with “a gypsy”, Esmeralda. It was famously turned into a Disney animated film in 1996.

Elba will play Quasimodo. His production company Green Door will be behind the effort – and he also plans to produce music for the movie, which Netflix describes as a “sonic and musical experience”.

The script will be written by Michael Mitnick (The Current War) and co-produced by Fred Berger (La La Land), Ana Garanito (Green Door) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special).

In a post on their official Twitter account, Netflix said: “The film is currently untitled but I’m strongly suggesting ‘Hunchback of Notre DAAAAAMN’.”

Elba made his directorial debut at Sundance earlier this year with the film ‘Yardie’, described by Variety as a “British gangland thriller” with a “Caribbean-accented makeover.”

But he is perhaps best known as detective John Luther in the BBC crime drama, or for his roles in The Wire, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Avengers: Infinity War, Beasts Of No Nation and Molly’s Game.

Last weekend, he is also said to have performed a DJ set for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at their royal wedding after-party.
