Meet Mohammed Nur, The Youngest Player At The Ongoing African Nations Championship

Nigeria has never won the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which is like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) but only for players in local leagues. While we’re expecting the Home Eagles to break that poor streak at this year’s edition, currently taking place in Morocco, Mohammed Nur has already made history as the youngest player in the competition at the age of 15.

Number 20 on the team, Nur was brought in as a substitute in Nigeria’s Group C match against Rwanda. Although he played for only seven minutes, he confirmed the promise that made Home Eagles coach, Salisu Yusuf to select him for the tournament.

Like most local league players, he started out in the streets before joining El-Kanemi Warriors FC in the Nigeria Professional Football League. And now, he’s already gone international – less than a year after his professional career started!

Speaking with CAF Online, he said:

“Honestly, I did not expect that. I started my career a year ago and I am already playing a major tournament like CHAN. It’s a real fairy tale. In addition, I made an appearance against Rwanda in the first match.

While playing in my neighbourhood, I didn’t expect that one day, I would become an international and don the colours of Nigeria.”

Speaking of Nigerian colours, the possibilities that await the teenager abroad isn’t lost on him. In the future, he hopes to sign a professional contract with a foreign club that’ll give him a bigger platform to better represent Nigeria.
