Pop Star Rihanna came dressed as the Pope to the Met Gala

Rihanna paid tribute to the Pope last night in a breathtaking Maison Margiela gown, complete with a papal tiara reminiscent of those worn by Popes from the medieval era up until the 1960s.

The strapless hand-beaded dress – which firmly embraced the event’s theme ofHeavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination – was festooned in hundreds of pearls. She accessorised the look with a pearl anklet and a bejewelled crucifix necklace.

Rihanna had more reason than most to raise the red carpet bar this year – she was co-hosting the Met Gala with Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney. The star is known for her fearless and meme-worthy Met Gala outfits, from 2015’s yellow Guo Pei yellow gown to last year’s petal-covered Comme des Garçons look. Indeed her sartorial tribute to Catholicism will go down in the style history books.
