Ronaldo and Messi snubbed as UEFA releases 2019/2020 award list

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, 5 and 6 times Ballon d’Or winners respectively were both ignored on Thursday the 17 of September, as UEFA releases the the names of the players shortlisted for the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League positional awards to honour the best Goalkeeper, Defender, Midfielder and Forward of the Champions League season, and the award will be presented on October 1st, on Thursday, during the Champions League group stage draw.

This is the first time that both players will not appear on the shortlist since its inception in the 2016/2017 season. The award is used to honour the best player in each position in Europe competition.

Messi had a pretty bad season at his club “Barcelona” in the 2019/2020 season, in which the club went trophyless, the last time Barcelona went trophyless was the 2007/2008 season. Messi was the highest scorer in the la liga satander competition in which they finished second in the table, below the Spanish Giants “Real Madrid”. Barcelona also suffered a terrible 8 – 2 defeat against the champions Bayern Munich in the Champions League Quarter-Finals.

Ronaldo suffered almost a similar fate, in which his club “Juventus” where knocked out at an early stage by Lyon, although he won the Seria A with his club but it was not enough to see him appear in the UEFA list.
