VIDEO: Manchester United 1-1 Real Madrid (2-1 on pens)

Manchester United beat Real Madrid on penalties – despite a defensive blunder from new signing Victor Lindelof.

United drew 1-1 with Champions League holders Real, who were without star man Cristiano Ronaldo, in front of 65,109 fans at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

A piece of dazzling skill from Anthony Martial in the first half helped put Jose Mourinho’s side ahead, the 21-year-old proving his enduring value after his United future was called into question.

But a late challenge from Lindelof, chopping down Real’s new signing Theo Hernandez to concede a penalty, allowed Zinedine Zidane’s side to score from the spot through Casemiro to earn a draw.

Martial provided the stand-out moment of the game, moments before the interval, dancing his way past Daniel Carvajal and Luka Modric and into the penalty area, before sliding the ball across the face of goal to the waiting Jesse Lingard who scored his second of the tour with a simple tap-in.

United looked to be heading towards a fourth straight win on tour to maintain their 100 per cent record on the Stateside trip.

That was until Lindelof conceded a blatant penalty in the 69th minute. The £30million defender took out Hernandez, with Casemiro dispatching the resulting spot-kick beyond David De Gea.

Despite putting on new £75m signing Romelu Lukaku and world record £89m midfielder Paul Pogba for the second-half, United were unable to force the win.
