Wakanda Forever: Black Panther Is Getting A Sequel
It may not be the biggest surprise ever but it’s very welcome news all the same. Marvel boss Kevin Feige has officially revealed that Black Panther is set for a sequel movie. Dropping by to chat with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the release of Avengers Infinity War, Feige confirmed that Black Panther 2 will be part of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘phase 4’, alongside Spider-Man 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
When asked about details of the follow-up, Feige naturally gave nothing away, stating: “Nothing specific to reveal, other than to say we absolutely will do that.” He does, however, go on to hint that the writers already have plenty of ideas up their sleeves. As he continues:
“One of the favorite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One and talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two. There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first Black Panther. We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one.”
Logically, the movie won’t be hitting screens until at least the end of 2019 (with Avengers 4 set to close MCU’s phase 3 in May 2019 before Spider-Man 2 opens phase 4 in July 2019). More realistically, it’ll probably hit around 2020 or even 2021.
Nevertheless, EW tries to dig deeper, asking whether the studio is considering answering fan requests for a movie based around the secondary characters of the first movie, such as Shuri or Okoye. Feige replies:
“I think there’s lots of potential. It’s a balance between leaving people wanting more and then giving them too much, but I would watch a movie about any of those characters you just named. I think Shuri’s astounding, and you’ll see much more of her in our universe. Okoye, I think I’d watch three action films just Okoye. I’m not saying we’re doing that, but I’m saying that we’re intrigued by them.”
Looks like we’re in for a bit of a wait for the sequel, but you can catch T’Challa in Avengers: Infinity War when it drops on April 26. You can check out the rest of the interview right here.
