Aston Villa extended their impressive home unbeaten streak to 22 matches after a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Newcastle United in their Premier League season opener. Villa, who were reduced to 10 men in the second half, managed to hold on against a Newcastle side that dominated the game but lacked a clinical finish.

The talk surrounding Newcastle’s offseason has been centered on striker Alexander Isak, and his absence was keenly felt in the first half. Despite creating numerous chances, the visitors couldn’t convert their opportunities. New signing Anthony Elanga and stand-in striker Anthony Gordon combined for seven shots before the break, but a solid performance from Villa’s debuting goalkeeper Marco Bizot kept the score level.

Aston Villa’s first-half performance was lackluster, with the team failing to register a single shot and completing a low percentage of their passes. However, the second half started with a brief sign of life, as Boubacar Kamara’s header was saved by Newcastle keeper Nick Pope.

The match’s turning point came when Villa’s Ezri Konsa was shown a straight red card for hauling down Anthony Gordon, who had broken through on goal. Despite the numerical advantage, Newcastle’s efforts were undermined by their lack of a a true attacking focal point, and they were unable to find the back of the net. Both sides were ultimately left to share the points on the opening weekend.

The draw marks just the second time Newcastle has avoided defeat in seven Premier League visits to Villa Park, though it snaps a three-game winning streak on the opening day of the season.
