Hundreds of youths in Benue State took to the streets of Otukpo on Wednesday to protest the relentless wave of killings, kidnappings, and property destruction attributed to suspected herdsmen. The demonstrators, visibly frustrated, blocked major roads and chanted �Enough is enough,� signaling their exasperation with the deteriorating security situation in the state.
In a video circulated by News Central TV, one protester passionately articulated the community�s grievances: �Enough is enough, we will go on a peaceful protest. No man born of a woman can stop us because enough is enough. Look at the way every night people will be chased from their homes, people will be killed, people will be kidnapped. Today we are expecting another killing, today we are expecting another kidnapping, today we are expecting people�s properties to be destroyed.�
The protest underscores the growing unrest in Otukpo and other parts of Benue State, where residents live in constant fear of attacks. The demonstrators accused local leaders of downplaying the crisis and issued a direct appeal to Governor Hyacinth Alia, urging him to address the insecurity plaguing the region. �We use this medium to call again on the executive governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia. Anybody telling you Otukpo is safe is a lie,� a protester declared.
The recurring violence, largely blamed on armed herdsmen, has displaced numerous communities, disrupted livelihoods, and heightened tensions in the state. Residents report near-daily incidents of abductions and destruction, with little reprieve despite previous calls for intervention.
As of now, the state government has not released an official response to the protest. However, the demonstrators remain resolute, demanding immediate and decisive action to restore peace and protect lives and property.
The protest in Otukpo reflects a broader cry for help from Benue residents, who continue to grapple with the devastating effects of unchecked insecurity. With the situation showing no signs of abating, pressure is mounting on authorities to deliver lasting solutions to the crisis.
