The tennis courts at the prestigious Ikoyi Club 1938 are once again buzzing with excitement as over 100 children have signed up to participate in the club�s annual Easter Holiday Tennis Clinic, which officially kicked off on Tuesday.
This year�s edition, tailored for aspiring young tennis players, spans across multiple age categories�ranging from boys and girls aged five to seven, eight to ten, 11 to 13, and 14 to 16. The week-long clinic, which runs through Friday, is designed to provide structured coaching sessions, basic and advanced skill development, and fun-filled activities to enhance the children�s passion for the game.
The highlight of the program, a junior tennis tournament, will be held on Saturday, April 26, with all participants showcasing the skills and techniques they�ve honed throughout the week. The tournament promises to be a festive display of youthful talent, friendly competition, and sportsmanship.
Each day of the clinic offers age-appropriate training modules led by experienced coaches and tennis professionals, with a focus on agility, footwork, coordination, racket handling, shot accuracy, and match awareness. Participants are also learning about the values of discipline, teamwork, and healthy competition through the sport.
One enthusiastic parent, Dr. Emeka Azinge, shared his joy at watching his six-year-old daughter take her first steps onto the tennis court. For him, the moment is steeped in nostalgia and family tradition.
�Tennis is almost like a rite of passage in my family,� Azinge said. �I began learning the game around the same age my daughter is now. My father used to bring me to a tennis academy just like this. So, it�s not just about playing the sport�it�s about sharing a generational experience. It�s also a fantastic way for her to socialise, stay active, and build confidence. I�m really proud to see her out there.�
The Chairman of the Ikoyi Club Tennis Section, Mr. Diran Famakinwa, expressed his delight at the turnout and assured that the clinic had been meticulously planned to ensure every child had a memorable and enriching experience.
