In a pivotal Game 4 against the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum suffered a concerning non-contact injury to his lower right leg late in the fourth quarter. The injury occurred as he chased down a loose ball and landed awkwardly, immediately grabbing at his leg in pain. Tatum was unable to put weight on it and had to be helped off the court in a wheelchair, silencing the Madison Square Garden crowd.

Before the injury, Tatum was putting together a monster performance, scoring 42 points on 16-of-28 shooting, with eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Despite his heroics, the Celtics fell short, losing 121-113 and falling behind 3-1 in the series.

Initial speculation has pointed to a potential Achilles tendon issue, but the team has yet to confirm a diagnosis. Head coach Joe Mazzulla said Tatum will undergo an MRI to determine the full extent of the injury.

Tatum’s status is now the biggest question mark for a Celtics team on the brink of elimination. Losing their franchise cornerstone at such a critical point in the playoffs is a massive blow, both strategically and emotionally.

Fans and fellow players have taken to social media to send well-wishes, hoping for good news. As Game 5 approaches, the Celtics must prepare for the possibility of fighting on without their leader—and doing so with their season on the line.
