Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, Nigeria’s esteemed former Chief Justice, has passed away at the age of 89. His death was announced by his family in a statement issued on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Justice Uwais had a distinguished career, serving as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) from 1995 to 2006. During his tenure, he earned a formidable reputation as a staunch defender of judicial independence and a committed reformer dedicated to upholding the integrity of the bench.

Throughout his illustrious career, Justice Uwais was widely respected for his principled stance on justice, constitutionalism, and democratic governance, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legal landscape.

“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. With hearts heavy yet full of gratitude to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation,” the family stated in a brief and heartfelt announcement.

According to the family, funeral prayers for the late jurist are scheduled to be held immediately after Juma’at prayers today at the National Mosque, Abuja.

Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a profound legal legacy that has shaped Nigeria’s judiciary for decades.
