Flamengo has officially kicked off their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) journey with a decisive 2-0 victory over Esperance Sportive de Tunis at the Lincoln Financial Field. This win puts the Brazilian giants firmly in contention in Group D, as they aim to make amends for their 2019 CWC final defeat.

The Mengão wasted no time in asserting their intentions, displaying an immediate drive to add more silverware to their illustrious cabinet. After an early header from Leo Ortiz just missed the mark, it didn’t take long for their pressure to convert into a goal. In the 17th minute, the in-form Giorgian de Arrascaeta, currently topping the Brasileiro Serie A scoring charts, clinically finished a pinpoint pass from Luiz Araujo, firing it back across the danger zone and into the net. Flamengo’s dominance continued throughout the first half, with captain Gerson forcing a sharp save from Esperance goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said, while Flamengo’s Agustin Rossi remained untested at the other end.

Esperance emerged for the second half with a bit more intent, and Pedro was nearly denied a double for Flamengo in the 53rd minute by a miraculous save from Ben Said following a brilliant build-up from Arrascaeta. The Tunisian champions, showing a vastly improved performance, finally crafted their first meaningful effort on target in the 67th minute, but Rossi was on hand to make a crucial leg save to deny Youcef Belaili.

However, any hopes of an Esperance comeback were quickly dashed. Just three minutes later, the man-of-the-match, Luiz Araujo, sealed the victory with a moment of individual brilliance. Found in a promising position by debutant Jorginho, Araujo took control and curled an exquisite strike into the far corner of the net, capping off a captivating performance.

This celebratory opening puts Flamengo in full flow for their highly anticipated clash against 2024/25 UEFA Conference League winners Chelsea, who also secured a 2-0 victory against LAFC on Monday. Meanwhile, Esperance de Tunis will face LAFC later this week, knowing that another defeat would likely spell their elimination from the tournament.
