Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has proposed a five-year, single-term presidency for Nigeria. He made this suggestion during a recent courtesy visit to Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.

Obi argued that a single term would allow a president to focus on governance and tangible work, rather than being distracted by the pursuit of re-election. “What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest of the years thinking about their next tenure. We must stop it, let’s face the real job, do your own and go,” he stated. He cited South Korea as a country with a similar model.

The 2027 presidential hopeful also vowed that if elected, he would serve for only a single four-year term, promising to not spend a day longer in office. Additionally, he expressed his desire to strengthen political parties, stating, “I want the party to be bigger than the president and the governors so that we can have orderliness.”

In response, Governor Mohammed extended an invitation to Obi to return to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that the PDP is where he belongs. The governor stressed the importance of political unity among opposition parties, calling on them to “harmonise their interests in the interest of Nigerians.”

Naira Strengthens as Foreign Reserves Increase
In a separate economic development, the Naira has seen a positive trend. Nigeria’s foreign reserves have risen to $39.994 billion after receiving 21 inflows, signaling improved liquidity and a strengthening of the country’s financial position. This influx of reserves is a welcome development amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the national currency and boost the economy.
