Sunderland made a brilliant return to the Premier League for the first time in eight years, securing a stunning 3-0 victory over West Ham United at the Stadium of Light. The win, powered by a second-half surge, marked a dream start for the Black Cats, while West Ham continued their historical struggles in opening-day matches.

Despite the electric atmosphere, Sunderland was reminded of the top-flight’s pace early on, as West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen tested debutant goalkeeper Robin Roefs with a shot. However, the home side quickly settled in, and Habib Diarra forced a save from Mads Hermansen to register Sunderland’s first real chance.

As the half-time whistle approached, Bowen’s influence grew, but West Ham, managed by Graham Potter, couldn’t convert their opportunities, leaving the score level at the break.

Sunderland came out with renewed energy in the second half, and their persistence paid off on the hour mark. The Stadium of Light erupted when Omar Alderete’s cross was brilliantly headed in by Eliezer Mayenda. The goal came after Sunderland had a brief scare when Jenson Seelt was injured.

West Ham’s hopes of a comeback dwindled as Sunderland doubled their lead in the 73rd minute. Simon Adingra delivered a cross that was headed home by Daniel Ballard, giving the home crowd even more to celebrate.

With West Ham unable to mount a response, Sunderland sealed the magnificent victory in stoppage time. Wilson Isidor drove from the halfway line to the edge of the box before slotting the ball into the far corner, capping off a perfect afternoon.

The win is a momentous one for Sunderland, ending their nine-match winless streak in season-opening Premier League games. For West Ham, questions will be asked of Potter, who suffered only his second loss in 18 games against promoted sides.
