Newcastle United officially announced on Sunday the signing of midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa in a major transfer deal that strengthens the Magpies’ squad for the new season. The 24-year-old has agreed to a long-term contract at St. James’ Park, becoming the club’s fourth first-team addition of the summer.

While the clubs did not disclose the transfer fee, media reports indicate that Newcastle paid Aston Villa a guaranteed £39 million, with a further £4 million in potential add-ons, for a total deal worth up to £43 million. Ramsey, a product of Villa’s youth academy, made 167 appearances for his boyhood club and was a key part of their squad last season, featuring in 46 games, including ten in the Champions League.

The signing follows a busy summer for Newcastle, which has also secured the services of Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale, and Malick Thiaw. The transfer comes as Newcastle manager Eddie Howe described the summer as “stressful,” a sentiment likely influenced by the ongoing situation surrounding star striker Alexander Isak, who was not in the squad for the opening match against Aston Villa.

Upon joining the club, Ramsey expressed his excitement. “It’s been a mad two or three days, but I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.

Howe was also enthusiastic about his new player, highlighting Ramsey’s qualities. “Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad,” Howe said. “His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football.”

Ramsey was a member of the England European Under-21 Championship-winning squad in 2023, where he played alongside his new Newcastle teammate, Anthony Gordon.

The two clubs faced each other just a day before the transfer was finalized, playing out a 0-0 draw to open their Premier League campaigns. Ramsey was not part of the Aston Villa squad for that match.
