Cristian Chivu has gotten off to a perfect start in his new role as Inter Milan’s boss, with the team beating Torino 5-0 in their Serie A opener. The emphatic victory is the Nerazzurri’s largest win over their opponents since the 1958/59 season, marking a significant first step in the 2025/26 campaign.

Having narrowly missed out on the Scudetto last season, Inter began their title challenge with a bang, taking the lead just 18 minutes into the match. A whipped corner from Nicolo Barella found the head of defender Alessandro Bastoni, whose precise near-post glance floated over Torino goalkeeper Franco Israel and into the far corner of the net. The home side’s lead was doubled later in the first half when Marcus Thuram capitalized on a lapse in the Torino defense to slide a tidy finish into the side netting.

The Champions League runners-up carried their momentum into the second half. Just after the restart, captain Lautaro Martinez effectively put an end to any realistic chance of a Torino comeback. Once again, it was a defensive error from Torino that created the opportunity, with an outstretched Martinez latching on to a rogue backpass to steer the ball home.

Keen to make a statement, especially after watching reigning champions Napoli win their opener, Inter continued their dominant performance. They added two more goals after the hour mark. Thuram first rose highest in the box to guide a delightful cross from Bastoni into the back of the net, securing his brace. His replacement, Ange-Yoan Bonny, also got in on the action. Torino’s defense was again caught out trying to play out from the back, allowing Martinez to pounce and lay it off to his substitute strike partner to make it five.

The result takes Inter to the top of the early Serie A table and marks the first time since 2003 that the club has won on the opening matchday under a foreign-born coach
