Manchester United secured their first win of the season in a hard-fought 3-2 victory over newly-promoted Burnley, with Bruno Fernandes converting a 97th-minute penalty. The win provides some much-needed relief for manager Ruben Amorim, whose team had a disastrous start to the season, including a midweek exit from the League Cup at the hands of fourth-tier Grimsby Town.

United twice took the lead on Saturday at Old Trafford but were unable to hold onto it. The decisive moment came in stoppage time when a VAR review awarded a penalty for a pull on Amad Diallo. Bruno Fernandes, who had a crucial penalty miss in the previous weekend’s match against Fulham, stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the net to seal the win.

The victory moves United to four points from their first three Premier League matches and eases the pressure on Amorim going into the international break. Speaking after the game, Amorim downplayed the significance of the win as a turning point, stating, “we have a lot to do, but we returned a little bit to our level today.”

The match also highlighted the ongoing goalkeeping issues for United. Following Andre Onana’s recent errors, Amorim started Altay Bayindir, who also had a difficult afternoon. The manager acknowledged the pressure on his goalkeepers and the team as a whole, saying that everyone “has to improve.”
