Premier League champions Liverpool have completed a British record-breaking deal to sign Swedish forward Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The transfer, reportedly worth around £130 million ($176 million), will see the 25-year-old join the Reds on a six-year contract after undergoing a medical on Monday.
A Blockbuster Summer Acquisition
The fee for Isak surpasses the previous record of £106 million, which Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023. The Swedish international, who scored an impressive 23 Premier League goals last season—second only to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah—has been at the center of a tense transfer saga this summer. He reportedly made it clear he wanted to move to Liverpool, even training away from the Newcastle squad to force the transfer.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Isak is the latest move in a lavish summer spending spree. The club has also brought in German midfielder Florian Wirtz, French attacker Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez as they look to build on their Premier League title win.
Newcastle’s Financial Relief
For Newcastle, the sale of Isak comes as a significant financial relief. Manager Eddie Howe hinted at a potential sale due to the impact of Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR). Newcastle has had to sell key players in recent years to avoid a points deduction, and the substantial fee from Isak’s transfer will help ease those financial concerns. The Magpies had previously rejected an initial £110 million bid for the player. The deal was made possible after Newcastle signed German striker Nick Woltemade for a club-record fee of up to £69 million.
Reds Remain on Top
Despite the infusion of new talent, Liverpool has yet to recapture the relentless form that saw them stroll to the title last season. However, they still lead the table with three wins from three games, including a crucial 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Meanwhile, a 0-0 draw against Leeds United leaves Newcastle sitting in 17th place.
