Nigeria’s Super Eagles are preparing for a pivotal World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda, with team captain William Troost-Ekong speaking out on the team’s focused and determined mindset. With their hopes of a ticket to the 2026 World Cup hanging in the balance, the Super Eagles understand that this is a must-win game.
Speaking to the media ahead of the clash, Troost-Ekong affirmed the team’s readiness. “We are ready for our game plan. We have had a good training session and I know my players,” he stated. “We need to be serious to win the game. My team is motivated, and we have spoken about the gravity of the game.”
The Super Eagles’ path to the World Cup has been more challenging than anticipated. As it stands in Group C, Nigeria is in fourth place with 7 points from six matches, trailing behind leaders South Africa (13 points), and tied with Rwanda and Benin, who both have 8 points. A victory against Rwanda would be crucial for Nigeria to close the gap and keep their qualification dreams alive.
Troost-Ekong, a veteran of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, highlighted the significance of the tournament. “Our desire and willingness to play at the World Cup is still the same,” he said. “I was part of the team in Russia 2018, and it was a memorable experience. I know everyone is willing to give their best on the field. We know we have to keep fighting and not give up. We will give our best from the first minute, and give our all on the pitch because it’s important for us to beat Rwanda.”
FIFA has appointed Chadian referee Alhadji Allaou Mahamat to officiate the match, which is being held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday. He will be assisted by compatriots Bogollah Issa (Assistant Referee One) and Moussa Hafiz (Assistant Referee Two), with Abdelkerim Ousmane serving as the fourth official. Egyptian Abdelsalam Mahmoud will act as the referee assessor, while Bakary Jammeh from The Gambia will serve as the match commissioner.
