Germany got their bid for a 19th consecutive FIFA World Cup back on track with a much-needed 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland at the RheinEnergieStadion. The win provided a crucial response after a disappointing opening loss to Slovakia earlier in the week.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side started brightly, with Serge Gnabry opening the scoring in the seventh minute. After a misjudgment by the Northern Ireland defense, Nick Woltemade quickly played in Gnabry, who expertly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Northern Ireland, however, refused to back down. They found an equalizer in the 34th minute when Isaac Price arrived unmarked at the far post to volley home from a corner, stunning the home crowd. The visitors continued to create chances, leaving Germany looking unsettled as the first half ended.

The decisive moment came in the second half with two quick-fire goals from Germany. In the 69th minute, substitute Nadiem Amiri capitalized on a defensive mix-up, tapping the ball into an empty net. Just three minutes later, the win was sealed when Florian Wirtz curled a spectacular free-kick from 25 yards out into the top corner.

The victory not only puts Germany’s qualifying campaign back on track but also ensures they avoid a fourth consecutive international defeat for the first time since 1913. As for Northern Ireland, they have now suffered a tenth consecutive loss to Germany, but with the expanded 48-team format for the next World Cup, their hopes of reaching the finals for the first time since 1986 remain alive.
