The Super Eagles of Nigeria have suffered a significant setback ahead of their crucial March 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, with defender Semi Ajayi ruled out due to a hamstring injury.

The West Bromwich Albion center-back sustained the injury during his club’s 2-0 victory over Oxford United on February 22nd. Ajayi was forced to leave the pitch in the 41st minute, replaced by Mason Holgate.

“Albion can confirm Semi Ajayi will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a hamstring injury,” West Bromwich Albion announced in a statement. “He will now enter a period of rehabilitation and will target a return before the seasons conclusion. Everyone at the club wishes Semi a speedy recovery.”

This injury is a major blow to Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Super Eagles currently sit fifth in Group C, with only three points from four matches. Manager Eric Chelle will now have to strategize without the experienced defender as they face crucial matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Ajayi’s absence also impacts West Bromwich Albion’s aspirations for promotion to the English Premier League. Manager Tony Mowbray expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s disappointing for him, frustrating for him and for us.” He acknowledged Ajayi’s qualities and confidence, emphasizing his importance to the team’s defensive strategy. “He’ll be a loss but we wish him a speedy recovery and we will get on with it with the fit players,” Mowbray added.

Ajayi joined West Bromwich Albion in 2019 and has since made 169 league appearances for the club. His injury leaves both the Super Eagles and West Bromwich Albion facing challenges as they navigate their respective campaigns.
