Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing his conviction that President Bola Tinubu is “doing very well” and his desire to offer him open support. The governor’s move was revealed during a recent appearance on Arise Television, where he vowed to openly pledge his loyalty to Tinubu.

Governor Eno explained that he could not support President Tinubu “in the dark.” While acknowledging that the PDP had provided the platform for him to become governor, he stated that the constitution grants him the liberty to switch parties. “I couldn’t say I’m in one party during the day and then go to Aso Rock at night to pledge my loyalty. It’s best to let people know where I stand,” he said, adding that when comparing President Tinubu with others, he naturally prefers him.

In a related development, Governor Eno has cautioned the newly sworn-in Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Sylvester Saviour Udofia, to remain apolitical. The governor administered the oath of office to Udofia, the Paramount Ruler of Abak Local Government, at a ceremony in Uyo. Eno warned the new chairman to avoid contesting political structures with his administration.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Eno told Udofia, “I pray, hope and trust you will bring the same cooperation we received from the outgone Chairman and even increase our capacity to work together for the unity of this great state.” He added, “I hope you will not attend one meeting in the day and entertain another at night. I hope you will not seek to own structures that the governor should be owning. It is on that belief I swear you in.”

The event, which was part of the activities marking the 38th anniversary of the state’s creation, also saw commendations for Governor Eno from traditional leaders. HRM Okuibom Ibibio III, Nteyin Solomon Etuk, and HRM Odidem Bassey Etim Edet praised the governor for his support for the traditional institution and pledged their continued support for his administration.
