Alexander Isak has expressed gratitude to Newcastle United and its supporters after completing a British-record £125 million transfer to Liverpool on Tuesday. The move, however, has been met with criticism from fans and a frosty farewell from the club, highlighting a bitter end to his time at St James’ Park.

The 25-year-old Sweden international’s departure follows a standoff that frayed loyalties and burned bridges with the Newcastle faithful. Despite the tension, Isak took to Instagram to share a final message, with comments on the post turned off. “I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together,” he wrote. “Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years. Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”

The club’s official statement, released 18 hours earlier, was starkly different. In a terse 37-word message, Newcastle confirmed the sale but made no mention of Isak’s contributions, goals, or the League Cup trophy he helped them secure. The cold tone underscored the breakdown in the relationship.

The Newcastle United Supporters’ Club publicly aired their displeasure, stating on X, “Whatever Alexander Isak goes on to achieve in his career, he will always be remembered for the way he has acted this summer. His behaviour has permanently destroyed his reputation in football.”

Isak will now join the Swedish national team for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo, which will be his first on-field appearances of the season after missing all of Newcastle’s pre-season and league fixtures. His exit closes a controversial chapter at Newcastle and opens a new one at Liverpool.
