Arsenal’s hopes of securing a second-place finish in the Premier League suffered a significant blow as they succumbed to a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth. This victory marked Bournemouth’s first-ever league double over the Gunners.
While Mikel Arteta’s squad may have had one eye on their crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, they could ill afford to take their league position for granted with a top-five finish still requiring confirmation.
Declan Rice, making his 100th appearance for Arsenal, had the Gunners’ first opportunity, firing an angled shot wide following intricate play between Martin degaard and Gabriel Martinelli. The midfielder then missed another chance, this time set up by Martinelli, as the home side began to find their rhythm.
However, the clearest chance in the opening 25 minutes fell to Bournemouth’s Evanilson, who headed over the bar from close range after a cross from Milos Kerkez.
Martinelli continued to pose a threat down the left wing, delivering a brilliant cross towards Leandro Trossard, whose looping header was saved by Bournemouth goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
It was Rice who eventually broke the deadlock for Arsenal. He expertly controlled degaard’s through ball, rounded Kepa, and calmly slotted the ball into the empty net.
Despite taking the lead, Arsenal looked vulnerable defensively. Evanilson provided a timely reminder of Bournemouth’s threat with a long-range effort that narrowly cleared the bar after catching David Raya out of position.
Arsenal started the second half with intent, searching for a second goal, with Bukayo Saka heavily involved. The England winger was picked out expertly by Myles Lewis-Skelly, cut inside onto his right foot, and fired a shot just past the far post.
However, against the run of play, Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth side restored parity in the 67th minute with a simple yet effective equalizer. Antoine Semenyo, who had only been on the pitch for two minutes, launched a long throw-in towards Dean Huijsen, whose glancing header flew past Raya.
Bournemouth weren’t finished there. Evanilson stunned the Emirates Stadium with an unorthodox finish at the far post after Marcus Tavernier flicked on Alex Scott’s corner. The goal underwent a lengthy VAR review for potential offside and handball, but was eventually allowed to stand despite replays suggesting the ball may have struck the striker’s arm before beating Raya.
Iraola’s team held on to secure a historic first-ever away victory against Arsenal, propelling them up to eighth in the table and significantly boosting their hopes of securing European qualification for the first time in their history.
Meanwhile, Arsenal suffered consecutive home defeats in all competitions for the first time in 16 months and will now be nervously looking over their shoulders as the battle for the top five intensifies.
