After a thrilling season that saw them claim a domestic treble, Barcelona’s focus has shifted from high-scoring spectacles to defensive solidity. While the team’s attacking prowess, led by teenager Lamine Yamal and winger Raphinha, resulted in 102 goals in La Liga, coach Hansi Flick has identified the defense as a key area for improvement.

The team’s high-pressing style, while exciting, often left them exposed, a weakness that was painfully evident in their 7-6 aggregate defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-final. Speaking about his team’s style, Flick admitted, “For me, it’s not always fun, sometimes I really suffer a lot.” He acknowledged the need for change, vowing before the summer break, “I know that we have to improve (defensively) and we will do it next season.”

Beyond the defensive concerns, questions remain about whether the attacking production can be maintained. While Raphinha is coming off a career-best season, striker Robert Lewandowski turns 37 this month. All eyes will be on Yamal, who now wears the iconic number 10 shirt, to continue his development and carry the team’s attacking hopes.

Barcelona’s financial constraints have limited their transfer activity compared to rivals like Real Madrid, who have spent over 172 million euros on new arrivals and a new coach in Xabi Alonso. The Catalan club’s strategy hinges on the continued growth of their young talents, including center-back Pau Cubarsi and midfielder Pedri. Their most notable moves have been a season-long loan for Marcus Rashford from Manchester United and the permanent signing of goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol, who is expected to take over as the first-choice keeper.

The team’s return to the Spotify Camp Nou is another source of hope. After two seasons at the Olympic Stadium, a move back to their traditional home is planned for the fourth league game of the season, though the date has been subject to change. The return is expected to boost the team’s morale and provide a more intimidating home advantage for crucial fixtures, including a potential title-deciding Clasico in May 2026.

As the season approaches, the central question for Barcelona is whether Flick can find the right balance between the team’s exhilarating attack and a sturdier defensive setup, a task that will determine their fate in a competitive league.
