Crystal Palace Football Club faces an anxious wait to discover if they will be permitted to participate in the 2025/26 Europa League, with UEFA’s strict multi-club ownership regulations casting a shadow over their qualification. The Eagles secured their spot in the prestigious European competition after a triumphant FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.
The uncertainty stems from the involvement of co-owner John Textor, who also holds a significant stake in French club Olympique Lyonnais. UEFA’s rules explicitly prohibit teams under the same ownership from competing in the same club competition, putting Palace’s Europa League aspirations at risk.
In a proactive move to address the issue, Textor has reportedly agreed to divest his 44% stake in Crystal Palace. This decision aims to clear the path for the London club’s European campaign.
However, UEFA has opted to defer its final ruling on Palace’s participation, pending the outcome of an appeal lodged by Lyon. The French club was recently demoted to Ligue 2 due to concerns over its financial management, a situation that directly impacts the multi-club ownership dilemma.
The duration of Lyon’s appeal process remains unclear, with UEFA simply stating that further details will be announced “in due course.” Should Crystal Palace ultimately be granted a place in the competition, they are slated to enter directly into the group phase, which is scheduled to commence in September 2025. The draw for the group stage is set for August 29, 2025.
