Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot has urged for a period of “reflection” within the club after their last chance of silverware in a dismal season evaporated with a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday. The defeat not only denied United a trophy but also cost them a crucial spot in next season’s Champions League, leaving many supporters in tears at the San Mams Stadium.
Manager Ruben Amorim, whose side currently sits a lowly 16th in the Premier League in what is their worst campaign in the Premier League era, had offered to resign without compensation if the United board desired a new boss.
“It hurts when you see the fans like this. Theyve been with us every single time after the poor results that we had and the difficult season that we had,” Dalot told United’s official website. “They dont deserve it, and if it doesnt hurt you, if you dont feel it, then you shouldn’t be here.”
The Portuguese international, who returned to action as a late substitute after nearly a month sidelined with a calf injury, emphasized the need for introspection. “So, its time for reflection. Everyone needs to reflect. And when its time to make decisions, make decisions. When its time to act, we act. And when its time for us to go on the pitch, we win games.”
Dalot, who joined United in 2018, felt the final was a microcosm of their entire season. “I think it sums up a little bit our season, a rollercoaster of emotions during the game. But we kept fighting until the end,” he said.
“It’s hard to take… not being able to win a trophy that could give some joy, especially to the fans. Seeing them at the end hurts a lot.” The raw emotion from the players and fans alike highlighted the deep disappointment pervading Old Trafford after a campaign far below the club’s expectations.
