Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested prominent Lagos socialite, Emeka Okonkwo Daniel, widely known as E-Money, over allegations of Naira note abuse and the defacement of foreign currencies.
Sources within the EFCC confirmed that E-Money was taken into custody on Monday night at his residence located in the Omole area of Lagos. The arrest follows allegations that the socialite was involved in the illegal act of spraying United States dollars, an activity that reportedly contravenes the Foreign Exchange Act.
An EFCC source, speaking to Punch, stated, On Monday night, we arrested E-Money for Naira abuse and defacing foreign currencies. Specifically, he was alleged to have sprayed U.S. dollars, which is against the Foreign Exchange Act. The source further disclosed that E-Money is currently undergoing preliminary investigations and will be brought before the court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
He was arrested at his Omole, Lagos residence. Preliminary investigations are ongoing, and he will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded, the source confirmed.
Another source, who chose to remain anonymous, corroborated the arrest to Punch and revealed that E-Money is being transferred to Abuja for further interrogation regarding the allegations. Yes, he has been arrested and is being flown to Abuja as I speak, to face investigators on the issue, the source added.
The arrest of E-Money, known for his flamboyant lifestyle and public displays of wealth, is likely to draw significant attention and underscores the EFCC’s commitment to enforcing laws against the abuse of the Naira and the handling of foreign currencies. The outcome of the EFCC’s investigation will determine the next steps in this developing case.
