Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has passed away at the age of 78, his family confirmed in a statement on Saturday. The elder statesman, who had a long and impactful career in Nigerian public service, died peacefully on August 9, 2025.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather; Chief Audu Ogbeh,” the statement read. “He passed away on the 9th of August 2025 at the fulfilled age of 78.”

The family described the late Ogbeh as a man who “departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community.” They also expressed gratitude for the many lives he touched, adding that they are “comforted by the example he set.”

Details regarding funeral arrangements will be made public in due course, and the family has requested privacy as they mourn the loss of their patriarch.

Chief Audu Ogbeh was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and administration. He served as the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2015 to 2019 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. His tenure was marked by a focus on food security and rural development policies.

Before his time as a minister, he was the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2001 to 2005. His political journey also included serving as Minister of Communications and later Minister of Steel Development in the Second Republic under President Shehu Shagari. Ogbeh was also a noted farmer and playwright.
