Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has addressed the recent wave of defections hitting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging remaining members not to despair but to stay committed to the party’s future. Speaking in Abuja during the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Sub-committee, Makinde acknowledged the current challenges but maintained that the PDP remains an enduring, relevant political force in Nigeria.

The governor’s comments come amid reports of high-profile leaders, including sitting governors like Enugu State’s Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State’s Douye Diri, being poised to leave the main opposition party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Makinde used the moment to offer a message of perseverance, suggesting that difficulty precedes enduring success. “This situation may appear like it’s difficult. The news out there is that people are defecting, governors are defecting. It may appear that it’s getting worse. But usually, when you want something that will endure, it will usually get worse before it gets better. So don’t even think otherwise,” he advised the party faithful.

He underscored the party’s deep national reach, stressing that despite outward appearances, “PDP is in every ward of this country.” Makinde reminded members that the PDP has been a constant political factor since the return to democracy in 1999, serving either as the ruling party or the main opposition.

Urging commitment and dedication, Makinde called on members to see the current turbulence as an opportunity for new leadership to emerge. “This is the moment where new, authentic heroes are going to be made. Not only for PDP but for our country,” he declared. He concluded with an emphatic statement that the PDP is “not going anywhere,” and that the party will ultimately produce leaders capable of rescuing Nigeria in the 2027 elections.
