Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has publicly backed under-fire manager Ruben Amorim, stating that the Portuguese coach will be given a minimum of three years to prove his worth at the club. Ratcliffe’s comments are a direct challenge to media speculation and a rejection of the “knee-jerk” culture he believes surrounds modern football management.

Amorim, who was appointed by Ratcliffe in November 2024, has faced constant pressure this season as United’s performance has struggled for consistency. The team finished 15th in the Premier League last season—their lowest top-flight position since 1973/74—and lost the Europa League final. This season has fared little better, with three losses in their first seven league games and a shocking League Cup defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby.

Despite the ongoing crisis, Ratcliffe, who took control of football operations in February 2024, insists that patience is paramount for long-term success.

“He has not had the best of seasons. Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be,” Ratcliffe told The Business podcast. “The press, sometimes I don’t understand. They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow.”

Ratcliffe emphasized that he would not manage the 20-time English champions based on constant media criticism. “You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week,” he added.

Amorim had previously admitted he considered quitting during the club’s darkest moments this term. However, the co-owner’s decision to provide a clear timeline signals that, for now, the manager’s immediate future is secure, despite the upcoming daunting trip to champions Liverpool after the international break. The club, which hasn’t won the English title since 2013, is now committed to a patient rebuilding process under Ratcliffe’s leadership.
