Manchester United has announced the appointment of former player Jonny Evans as the new Head of Loans and Pathways, marking his return to the club where he enjoyed a highly successful playing career. The 37-year-old’s new role will focus on preparing young talent for integration into the first team.

Evans, a product of United’s esteemed academy, made 241 appearances for the Red Devils, accumulating an impressive trophy haul that includes three Premier League titles, the Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups.

In a statement announcing his retirement from playing and his new position, Evans expressed immense pride and gratitude for his career, while also conveying his excitement for the challenges ahead. “I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead,” Evans stated. He extended heartfelt thanks to his former managers, coaches, staff, teammates, and particularly the fans for their unwavering support throughout his two decades in professional football.

Highlighting the importance of his new role, Evans added, “I am looking forward to working with the next generation of talented players to support them in reaching their potential. Having had experience with loans myself, I know the crucial role that they can play within a player’s development. I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United.”

Director of Football Jason Wilcox lauded Evans’s appointment, emphasizing his potential as a role model for the club’s aspiring young players. “Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players,” Wilcox commented. “His knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.”

Evans, who also earned 107 caps for Northern Ireland and was awarded an MBE in 2023 for his services to football, brings a wealth of experience and understanding of the club’s ethos. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by Manchester United to leverage his extensive knowledge and inspire the next generation of talent.
