Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany lauded his team’s strong mentality after they fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig on Saturday. Despite the thrilling comeback, the result means Bayern will have to wait a little longer to officially celebrate their Bundesliga title win.
In a captivating match, Bayern found themselves trailing 2-0 at halftime. However, they displayed resilience by scoring two quick goals to level the score and then taking the lead in the 83rd minute through Leroy Sane. Leipzig, determined to secure points at home, managed to snatch a late equalizer through Yussuf Poulsen deep into stoppage time.
The draw leaves Bayern with 76 points, nine points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, who travel to Freiburg on Sunday. With only two games remaining and a significantly superior goal difference, Bayern will clinch their 34th league title if Leverkusen fails to win their match.
Speaking at the post-game press conference, Kompany acknowledged the team’s slow start but praised their second-half performance. “In the first half we did not have the energy,” he admitted. “It was a good game for the fans and not a bad result for us, and I am very proud of the second half.”
He further emphasized the team’s spirit despite missing key players. “The reason I am proud is we had quite a few players not there (through injury) and the image and energy was not too different than what we do in our best moments.”
Bayern are currently dealing with a significant injury list, including Jamal Musiala, Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito. Additionally, Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane was absent from Saturday’s match due to suspension.
Kompany, in his debut season as Bayern coach, is aiming to reclaim the league trophy after Bayer Leverkusen ended the Bavarian giants’ unprecedented 11-year reign last season with a domestic league and Cup double.
Bayern now have the opportunity to secure the Bundesliga title in front of their home supporters next week when they face Borussia Monchengladbach.
