Kwara United have etched their name into Nigerian football history, lifting their first-ever major honour by defeating giant-killers Abakaliki FC 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout in the final of the President Federation Cup. The match, played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, ended goalless in regulation time, setting the stage for the tense decider from the spot.

The hard-fought victory means Kwara United will now represent Nigeria in the upcoming CAF Confederation Cup, marking a significant achievement for the Ilorin-based club.

Both teams had their opportunities to break the deadlock during the 90 minutes, but a combination of resolute defending and profligate finishing ensured the net remained undisturbed. The final whistle brought with it the familiar tension of a penalty shootout, a scenario Abakaliki FC had mastered throughout their remarkable cup run.

Abakaliki FC, a team set to compete in the third-tier league next season, had earned their ‘giant-killer’ moniker by dispatching several top-flight clubs via penalty shootouts on their journey to the final. However, their prowess from 12 yards ultimately deserted them when it mattered most, as Kwara United held their nerve to convert more of their spot-kicks and claim the coveted trophy.
