French football legend Zinedine Zidane’s son, Luca Zidane, has officially declared his pride in representing Algeria as he prepares for the North African nation’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Somalia. The 27-year-old goalkeeper, who previously turned out for France’s youth teams, recently switched his sporting nationality to the country where his grandparents were born, solidifying his commitment to the Fennec Foxes.

Speaking at a press conference in Oran, the goalkeeper was clear about his decision and his immediate goals. “I’m very happy to be here. It makes me proud and I will give everything at 100 percent to make the Algerian people proud,” he stated. Zidane junior, who currently plays for Spanish second-tier side Granada, received his first call-up for Algeria in the 26-man squad assembled for the two upcoming qualifiers. He confirmed that his entire family supports the decision, noting that his grandfather is particularly delighted about his choice.

Addressing the unavoidable comparison to his father, the 1998 World Cup winner for France, Luca said he is focused on forging his own path: “My father had his journey, his career. As for me, I have my journey, my career.”

The timing of his decision is key, as Algeria stands on the brink of securing a spot at next year’s World Cup. They can become the fourth African team to qualify if they secure a win against Somalia. Luca emphasized that the team’s objective is singular: “The first objective, it’s tomorrow, it’s Somalia and to win to qualify for the World Cup.” His debut marks a new era for the goalkeeper and adds a major international talking point to Algeria’s World Cup ambitions.
