A dramatic pair of semi-final clashes has set the stage for an unprecedented final in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), as Madagascar and Morocco emerged victorious to book their place in the championship match.

In a tense and fiercely contested semi-final at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Madagascar made history by reaching their first-ever CHAN final. The Barea overcame Sudan in a gritty encounter that was only settled in extra time. Despite playing the final moments of the match with ten men after Fenohasina Razafimaro’s dismissal, Madagascar showed incredible resolve. The breakthrough came in the 116th minute when substitute Toky Rakotondraibe latched onto a pass from Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa and calmly slotted home the winner, sending Romuald Rakotondrabe’s side into the final. The narrow 1-0 victory was a testament to the team’s relentless fighting spirit.

Meanwhile, in Kampala, a heavyweight battle unfolded as two-time champions Morocco took on holders Senegal. The Atlas Lions had to endure a thrilling 120-minute contest before prevailing 5-3 in a penalty shootout. Senegal struck first through a header from Joseph Layousse in the 16th minute, but Morocco responded swiftly just seven minutes later. Sabir Bougrine scored with a powerful long-range strike that leveled the score at 1-1. With neither side able to find a winner in normal or extra time, the match went to penalties. Morocco’s players showed remarkable composure, converting all five of their kicks, while Senegal’s captain Seyni Ndiaye hit the crossbar with the first spot-kick, a miss that proved decisive.

The stage is now set for a fascinating final in Nairobi on Saturday. Morocco will be chasing their third CHAN title, aiming to cement their status as a continental powerhouse. On the other side, Madagascar will look to complete a fairytale run and make history as the first island nation to lift the trophy. Before the final, Senegal and Sudan will face off in the third-place playoff in Kampala.
