A significant legal standoff between Manchester City and the Premier League has come to an end, as the two parties announced a settlement over the rules governing Associated Party Transactions (APTs). The agreement means that Manchester City has accepted the current APT rules as “valid and binding,” bringing an end to the arbitration proceedings the club initiated earlier this year.

The dispute centered on the Premier League’s rules designed to ensure that commercial and sponsorship deals made by clubs with companies related to their ownership are at fair market value. The rules are in place to prevent the artificial inflation of these deals, which could give clubs an unfair financial advantage. Manchester City had previously challenged amendments to these rules, arguing that certain aspects were discriminatory.

In a joint statement, both sides confirmed that they have “agreed to terminate the proceedings,” putting an end to the legal battle. While the details of the settlement have not been disclosed, the outcome is a major development in the ongoing relationship between the club and the league.

This resolution, however, is separate from the more than 100 charges of alleged financial breaches that Manchester City still faces from the Premier League. The charges, which the club vehemently denies, relate to a period between 2009 and 2018 and are currently being reviewed by an independent commission. A verdict on that case is still pending.

The settlement of the APT dispute closes one chapter in a series of legal and financial confrontations, but the larger and more high-stakes case regarding the alleged financial breaches remains a key point of focus for the football world.
