Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has passionately called on his former club to seize the opportunity to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. The Super Eagles forward was reportedly a target for the West London club last summer, but a move ultimately failed to materialize due to wage demands.

Osimhen has been enjoying a sensational season on loan at Turkish champions Galatasaray, notching an impressive 27 goals and providing five assists in just 32 appearances across all competitions. As Chelsea continue their search for reinforcements in their attacking department, the need for a new target man to support Senegalese international Nicolas Jackson remains a critical priority.

Despite Osimhen’s undeniable talent and apparent fit for the team, recent reports suggest that Enzo Maresca’s side may not be prioritizing the former Lille star in their summer transfer plans. This potential oversight has prompted Mikel Obi to voice his strong opinion, emphasizing that Chelsea cannot afford to miss out on a player of Osimhen’s caliber who also has a deep connection to the club.

Speaking with conviction on the Obione podcast, Mikel Obi stated, Listen, it will be really sad if we dont get a player who supported us as a kid and wants to wear the jersey of this football club. His idol is Didier Drogba, and its clear that he harbors ambitions to break records, win trophies, and help us reclaim our place among the elite. His mission would be to surpass Drogbas legacies and achievements.”

Mikel Obi believes Osimhen’s desire to emulate Chelsea legend Didier Drogba should be a significant factor in the club’s decision-making process. He further added, If the club decides not to pursue this signing, then thats their choice, and I wish them the best. However, the positive takeaway is that the pathway to Osimhen is still clear; we know where we left things off. The club could simply pick up the phone and bring him in. Its time to make the move!

Mikel Obi’s passionate plea highlights the strong sentiment among some Chelsea fans and former players that Osimhen would be a transformative signing for the club, and that they should not let this opportunity pass them by again.
