AC Milan mounted a stunning second-half fightback, scoring two goals in as many minutes to secure a 2-1 victory over Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Monday night. This result keeps Milan’s slim hopes of a top-seven finish alive, as they now sit six points adrift with just three games remaining.

The hosts, who had not won in their previous seven encounters against Milan, started brightly. Brooke Norton-Cuffy created the first significant chance, bursting into the box, but his shot was well saved by Mike Maignan. The Milan goalkeeper was called into action again shortly after, making an even better stop to deny Junior Messias from close range.

Despite Genoa’s early dominance, Milan gradually grew into the game. Theo Hernandez tested Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali with a long-range strike, and moments later, Stefano Sabelli’s effort was saved at the other end. Leali then made a crucial save, rushing off his line to block Christian Pulisic’s shot, ensuring the teams went into the break level.

Heavy rain made conditions increasingly difficult in the second half. Genoa took the lead in the 61st minute through substitute Vitinha, who volleyed home a cross from Aaron Martin just seconds after coming onto the pitch, ending his year-long goal drought.

However, Milan, who have a reputation for fighting back from losing positions this season, responded swiftly. Substitute Rafael Leao equalized in the 76th minute with a deflected shot from near the penalty spot. Just seconds later, the comeback was complete when Genoa’s Morten Frendrup inadvertently turned a cross into his own net.

Genoa struggled to find a response in the closing stages and ultimately slipped to their third consecutive defeat, significantly damaging their hopes of a top-half finish. For Milan, this victory marks their third consecutive away win for the first time since March 2024, providing a much-needed boost as they look to climb the Serie A table.
