Naomi Osaka’s comeback tour has hit a high note, as the Japanese star secured her spot in the semi-finals of the US Open on Wednesday. In a display of impressive mental fortitude and skill, she defeated the Czech 11th seed, Karolina Muchova, in straight sets with a final score of 6-4, 7-6(3).
This marks Osaka’s deepest run in a Grand Slam since her Australian Open victory in 2021. Throughout her journey to the last four, she has showcased flashes of the brilliance that led her to four Grand Slam singles titles before she stepped away from the sport in 2023. Her path to the semi-finals included a notable win over the third seed, Coco Gauff, in the last 16.
Following her hard-fought victory on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the 27-year-old expressed her gratitude. “It was an incredibly difficult match,” Osaka said, adding that Muchova is “one of the best players in the world.” Reflecting on her time away from tennis, she shared that she had “dreamed of returning to the elite stage.”
The match itself was a tight affair, with both players serving smoothly in the first set. Break point opportunities were rare, but Osaka capitalized on her chance in the 10th game, converting her second set point to take the lead.
The second set began with Muchova taking a medical timeout for her left thigh, which was then heavily strapped. While she managed to secure an early break, Osaka quickly broke back. The set remained a back-and-forth battle until Muchova broke for a 5-4 lead. However, Osaka’s resilience shone through as she broke back to love, forcing a tie-break that she confidently dominated to seal her victory.
Osaka is now set to face the eighth seed, Amanda Anisimova, in Thursday’s semi-final. With her strong performance against a trio of higher-ranked opponents, she enters the match with significant momentum and confidence.
