The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the successful pilot deployment of its Electronic Currency Declaration Form (e-CDF) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, recording over $1.34 million in both inbound and outbound declarations.

In a statement released on Friday by NCS spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, the Service highlighted that this initiative is a key component of its ongoing digital transformation and modernization efforts. The aim is to bolster border controls and improve transparency in financial disclosures.

According to the statement, the pilot phase, which commenced on April 9th, 2025, was implemented smoothly and demonstrated the system’s capability to effectively capture currency declarations digitally for both arriving and departing passengers. This new system offers a more secure, efficient, and accountable process for cross-border travelers.

During the pilot period, the e-CDF system processed a total of 69 currency declaration transactions. Outbound declarations accounted for the majority with fifty-one (51) transactions, totaling a declared value of $1,200,281.22. Inbound declarations stood at eighteen (18) transactions, with a total declared value of $177,786.88.

The NCS emphasized that the e-CDF platform was developed in line with international best practices for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (CFT) protocols. It provides real-time data that can enhance intelligence gathering and collaboration between different agencies.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, reiterated the NCS’s commitment to utilizing technology to improve compliance, facilitate legitimate travel and trade, and safeguard the integrity of Nigerias borders.

Following the positive outcome of this pilot phase, the NCS has indicated plans to extend the deployment of the e-CDF system to other international airports and border posts across Nigeria.
