The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced that Nigeria successfully met the deadline of March 28, 2025, to express its interest in bidding for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. This marks a significant step in Nigeria’s potential journey to hosting the prestigious international multi-sport event.

Formalizing a bid for the Commonwealth Games requires the endorsement of the Nigerian government, a crucial next step for the NOC in this endeavor.

Nigeria has faced challenges in the past when it comes to hosting major international competitions, notably losing the opportunity to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games which were eventually held in Glasgow, Scotland. Despite this history, the NOC remains optimistic about the prospects of their new bid for the 2030 Games.

In a statement released by NOC spokesman, Tony Nezianya, he emphasized that Nigerias proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in the nation’s capital city of Abuja presents a unique opportunity. He stated that hosting the Games would not only showcase Nigerias developmental progress but also significantly enhance its standing on the global stage. Furthermore, the NOC believes that the event would greatly invigorate the nations sports culture and provide an invaluable platform to highlight Nigerias rich cultural heritage and capabilities.

Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event in 2003, when the African Games were held in Abuja. The NOC believes that this past experience offers a solid and reliable foundation for managing the complexities associated with hosting large-scale international events, including crucial aspects like logistics, hospitality services, and the necessary infrastructure development. The ability to successfully execute such a significant event, according to the NOC, would send a powerful message about Nigerias growth and its readiness to undertake significant international sports responsibilities.

It is important to note that the next edition of the Commonwealth Games is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to March 29, 2026. Initially, the Australian state of Victoria was slated to host these Games, but they ultimately withdrew their bid due to escalating costs. Nigeria now hopes to make a compelling case to host the subsequent edition in 2030
