Christian Chukwu, a legendary figure in Nigerian football, has passed away at the age of 74, his family has confirmed. The former captain of the Green Eagles (now Super Eagles) was a national icon, celebrated for his contributions to the sport. �

Chukwu led the Nigerian national team to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980, a historic moment for the nation. He was also a key member of the squads that secured third place in the 1976 and 1978 AFCON tournaments.

At the club level, Chukwu was synonymous with Enugu Rangers, where he spent his entire Nigerian Professional Football League career from 1972 to 1981. His time with the Flying Antelopes was marked by remarkable success, including four league titles, four FA Cup titles, and the 1977 African Cup Winners� Cup, where Rangers triumphed over Cameroon�s Canon Yaounde.

Following his illustrious playing career, Chukwu transitioned into coaching. He served as the head coach of the Kenyan national team in 1998 before returning to Nigeria. In 2003, he was appointed as the Super Eagles coach, leading the team to a third-place finish at the 2004 AFCON. He was later suspended in 2005 during the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. �

The news of Chukwu’s passing has deeply saddened the Nigerian football community. His former international teammate, Segun Odegbami, expressed his grief on social media, describing Chukwu as his “bosom friend” and “one of the greatest football players in Nigeria�s football history.”

Chukwu had faced significant health challenges in recent years. Notably, billionaire Femi Otedola provided financial support for his medical treatment during a trip to the United States.

Christian Chukwu’s legacy as a player and coach will forever be etched in the annals of Nigerian football. He will be remembered as a true patriot and a symbol of excellence.
