The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the imminent rollout of its highly anticipated electronic visa (e-visa) system, scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2025.
The initiative was unveiled on Wednesday during a strategic meeting in Abuja focused on immigration protocols, jointly led by Minister of Interior Tunji Ojo and Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo. This move signifies Nigeria’s commitment to becoming a more accessible and technologically advanced destination while maintaining strong national security measures.
The e-visa system will introduce a completely digital visa application process, eliminating the requirement for travelers to visit Nigerian embassies or consulates in person. Designed for maximum convenience, applicants will be able to complete an online application form, upload necessary documents such as passports, pay the visa fee electronically, and receive their travel authorization via email.
Once approved, the e-visa can be printed or stored digitally for presentation upon arrival at Nigerian entry points. The primary target groups for this streamlined process are tourists, business travelers, and transit passengers. The government anticipates that this digital approach will significantly reduce paperwork and drastically shorten visa processing times.
Speaking at the announcement meeting, Minister of Interior Tunji Ojo emphasized the advanced infrastructure underpinning the new system. Weve established a centralized visa approval center at the immigration headquarters, he stated. Our officers are trained, well-equipped, and integrated with major global criminal record databases, including Interpol. This ensures thorough background checks for all entrants, safeguarding Nigeria while welcoming visitors.
Minister Ojo further highlighted the government’s objective to eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles. No one should need to lobby for a visa to explore Nigerias beauty. Were opening our borders responsibly, he affirmed, underscoring the dual focus on accessibility and security.
