President Bola Tinubu has unveiled a new scholarship programme that will enable students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to pursue studies in Nigerian universities, commencing from the next academic session.

The announcement was made during a joint press conference on Monday in Gros Islet, alongside the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J. Pierre. President Tinubu confirmed that the initiative has already been set in motion and will be jointly managed by Nigeria and the OECS member states.

According to the Nigerian leader, the scholarship scheme is a key component of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening ties between Africa and the Caribbean, particularly in the critical areas of education, agriculture, and trade.

“The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States is very close to us in Africa,” President Tinubu remarked. “We are moving forward to facilitate business and education opportunities, build capacity, and explore other areas like agriculture and food security. We won’t drop the ball.”

He further disclosed that discussions are currently underway to facilitate visa-free entry for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS countries, a move that would further ease travel and collaboration between the regions.

Addressing potential concerns about bureaucratic hurdles, President Tinubu expressed optimism, stating, “I don’t look at difficulties. I look at problem-solving. If we move on a straight line, we get our goal achieved, and there will be no problems.”

In his address, Prime Minister Pierre lauded the scholarship offer as a “timely and practical expression of solidarity” between Nigeria and the OECS. He revealed that discussions between both sides also encompassed strategies to enhance air connectivity, streamline visa processes, and boost tourism across the two regions.

“We’re excited about what this means for our young people,” Prime Minister Pierre stated. “It’s not just about education, it’s about building real, lasting partnerships.” He confirmed expectations for students to begin their studies in Nigeria in the upcoming academic year, adding, “We have formed a joint committee to address education, trade, and travel issues, and the people-to-people exchange will be key.”

Earlier in his visit, President Tinubu delivered an address to a special joint sitting of Saint Lucia’s Parliament, where he articulated his vision for a revitalized partnership between Nigeria and the Caribbean bloc.
