Olympique Lyonnais announced today the return of former Algeria international Rachid Ghezzal on a contract that will keep him with the Ligue 1 side until June 2026. The 33-year-old winger, who began his football journey at the club, rejoins Lyon as a free agent.
Ghezzal’s history with the club runs deep. He first joined the Lyon academy at the age of 12 in 2004 and made his senior team debut eight years later. He went on to make 119 appearances before his departure in 2017. His return comes after a year-long spell with Turkish club Caykur Rizespor.
In a statement, Olympique Lyonnais described Ghezzal’s return as a “personal and emotional adventure, driven by a shared desire between the player and Olympique Lyonnais.” The club also highlighted his value beyond the pitch, stating that his “experience at the highest level” will make him a “valuable link to the young players in the professional squad.”
The move adds to the positive momentum for Lyon, who have started their Ligue 1 campaign with three consecutive victories. The club will look to continue its strong start when they face Stade Rennais next weekend.
